Lonely Road South America E26: When Road Becomes River
Riding Argentina's wildest back roads from Uspallata to dinosaur country — where gravel turns to river and the desert throws a curveball.
Day 120 of the adventure continues as I leave the Gran Hotel Uspallata and tackle Ruta Provincial 52, the legendary "Camino de las 365 Curvas" (Road of 365 Curves) through the Precordillera. This historic route — once a Jesuit silver mining path and Charles Darwin's own trail — takes a dramatic turn when the gravel road dissolves into a muddy riverbed mid-descent.
From there it's on to San Juan, through a maze of checkpoints and roundabout chaos, before heading into true dinosaur territory: Villa San Agustín and the incredible Parque Provincial Ischigualasto — home to some of the world's oldest known dinosaur fossils and 40-metre petrified trees dating back over 225 million years.
Add a drone mishap, a wall of ominous storm clouds, and a race against flash floods on desert dirt roads, and you've got one of the most unpredictable legs of this South American motorcycle journey yet.
